I am a contract instructor for the U.S. Fire Administration (UFSA) National Fire Academy and affiliated faculty for the Christian Regenhard Center for Emergency Response Studies (CUNY). I completed a postdoc with Brown University supporting NIST's Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) Division. Previously, I worked in the defense industry as a Research Psychologist for the U.S. Navy and as a Research Statistician for Orange County Fire Rescue Department in Orange County, FL

Hazmat Awareness (Hazcom)

As first responders, you may be called to respond to an environment with a toxic chemical; you may or may not be aware of its presence initially. This course will discuss many toxic chemicals, such as hexavalent chromium, crystalline silica, flammable liquids, combustible liquids, benzene, arsenic, formaldehyde, asbestos, and lead. In each segment, you will learn about the risks of exposure, how to avoid exposure, relevant handling procedures, necessary PPE, and what to do if you are exposed.
